Pre-A.T. (2/17/12) - Assembling the Gear/Home

Brett put a lot of thought into the gear that he packed for his trip. He spent over a year getting ready. During that time he read reviews and read advice about what to bring and what not to bring. While he did shed a few pounds of gear at Neels Gap, I think he did a good job of assembling his pack. He has his gear organized into stuff sacks and has said that he always puts things back the same way each morning when he breaks up camp. That helps him know where anything is when he needs it, and also helps him not forget anything in the morning.

Brett has a good backpack that is set up in such a way that it holds a lot of gear and keeps it organized. But if you know Brett, you know that he still made a few modifications to make it tailored just for him. One of the modifications he was most happy with was creating the perfect spot for his camera. It is easy to get to so he never misses a photo opportunity. He found a small camera case and had his mom resew the strap so that it could be attached to the straps of the backpack over his chest.

Here is what Brett will be carrying every day for six months.
Here is a peek at what is in some of the stuff sacks.
Some things have been sent home, and some things have been switched out. But that is most everything. I ended up buying the same trail guide that Brett is using, "The A.T. Guide" by David "Awol" Miller. This way I can follow along more easily. It seems like a great guide. Brett likes it better than another of the trail guides he reviewed.

Even if the backpack fit me I think I would still have a hard time carrying it all day, every day.
That didn't even include the food and water!
